What is Tamiflu?
Tamiflu is an oral medication designed to treat the flu (an infection caused by influenza virus). It belongs to a group of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. These medications attack the influenza virus and prevent it from spreading inside your body. Tamiflu treats flu at its source by attacking the virus that causes the flu, rather than simply masking symptoms. Each Tamiflu capsule contains 75 mg of active drug and should be taken by mouth.

Who should consider taking Tamiflu?
Tamiflu has been subject to a number of large clinical trials, and has been proven in terms of its safety and reliability, over a number of years. Patients who are 1 year and older, who have flu symptoms that have appeared within the previous day or two, are advised to speak to a doctor, concerning this medication. Typical symptoms of the flu include a sudden onset of fever and chills, cough, muscle pain, headaches, fatigue and general body weakness. Some people also get a stuffy nose and sore throat. It is these final two symptoms that cause many people to confuse the influenza virus with a common cold. Influenza is a much more serious condition than a cold, residing in the body for a longer period of time, and posing a greater strain upon the immune system.
Whilst Tamiflu has been deemed suitable for the wider majority of sufferers, there are a small minority of people for whom it is not recommended. You should not take Tamiflu if you are allergic to oseltamivir phosphate or any other ingredients of the medication. Before starting treatment, make sure your doctor knows if you are taking any other medication, or have ever had any kidney problems. On its own, Tamiflu is a well tolerated medication, although any problems that may occur are likely to result from the combined ingestion of other drugs. In any case you should always check first with your doctor.
Can I take other medications with Tamiflu?
Tamiflu has been shown to have a good safety profile, with minimal chance of adverse effects, when taken alongside other drugs. Your doctor may recommend taking over-the-counter medications to reduce fever or other symptoms, while the antiviral action of Tamiflu takes effect. Before starting treatment, make sure that your healthcare professional is aware if you are taking any other medication.
How and when should I take Tamiflu?
A single course of Tamiflu treatment contains 10 tablets of 75mg strength. It should be taken twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for five days and it can be taken with or without food. As with many medicines, if taken with a light snack, milk, or a meal, the potential for stomach upset can be reduced. It is important to complete the entire treatment of ten capsules, even if you are feeling better. Furthermore, never share Tamiflu with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms. This flu medication is a prescription treatment that is only available after being prescribed to an individual based on their current health status. Sharing it with another person is potentially very dangerous. It is important that you begin your treatment with Tamiflu as soon as possible from the first appearance of any flu symptoms.
