Avian bird flu is sometimes referred to as avian flu or more commonly Bird flu. It refers to the influenza virus that is adapted to birds, rather than humans. Specifically, the H5N1 subtype of the avian influenza is currently a popular topic of discussion in the media, due to prediction by experts that a potential pandemic, is around the corner. However, there is little evidence to show that H5N1 influenza can be passed from human to human. However, irrespective of this there have been 412 cases of human infection, 62% of whom died from the virus. As a result, many believe that the world is teetering on the edge of a pandemic, capable of wiping out a large percentage of the global population.
