Swine Flu Statistics

Swine flu, or H1N1, refers to the influenza virus that broke out into near pandemic levels in April of 2009. It’s believed that the virus started out in Mexico, before moving quickly through the Americas; both North and South. Unlike avian or bird flu, swine flu’s infection and mortality rate was considerably higher for the intense periods that humans experienced infection. This was due to the strain being highly contagious as well as extremely resilient to vaccination and treatment. Since the initial outbreak, swine flu has become a “seasonal” flu which occurrences still happening regularly around the world but in smaller numbers. There is now however, the fear that the strain may evolve to resist the effective treatment through the use of Tamiflu.
